Tough week medically. Both kids got sick and we're in a medication transition. Very tough and unstable.

It snowed yesterday and I walked along the Muddy. Today I went to the gym. Still finding it hard to do yoga.

We're slowly getting ride of things through Buy Nothing Brookline. It turns out the monitor I got won't work but I moved my Mom's TV into our room. This will make for less stress around evening entertainment, I hope.

Looking for a rug too. And we need a new oven. I want to buy these things soon before the country falls apart. What will add value to our lives?

This is the final few days of college apps. It will be good to have it behind us. Like Satan.

It's another COVID high season, so we're not eating indoors and I'm being more cautious about masking. Not sure it will ever end but we know what to do.

The horrible fires in LA are very upsetting. The clouds get lower and lower. Visibility diminishes.

My morning mantra was prepare for worse and hope for the best.

We've spent two night in Tuckahoe which has been pleasant. We drove down Wednesday night. Yesterday we visited Sarah Lawrence College and the Cloisters. I didn't sleep well the night before, so we had pizza in the room and watched TV. I crashed out at 9:30 PM. Today we head into Manhattan. We're meeting up with Nihil in the Village and checking out NYU and New School.

It was challenging to get here. We've had trepidation about the travel but we've been OK so far. I think this was a good bridge to the city. Lots of downtime, laidback plans of one thing a day, early bed time.

Sarah Lawrence was nice and we had a beautiful day of it. Very mellow, with a bit of a Bard woodsy vibe. Violet likes the idea of having a Don and a personal touch, plus theater opportunities. I like that its a quiet campus but close to the city. I am a bit spoiled by the beauty of BMC buildings though. I think with her interest in theater and writing it's a good fit.

The Cloisters was magical. What an incredible space! The gardens and views of the river are fantastic. I was interested in the stone work, carved by nameless masons and full of humor and life. I was excited to see the tapestries, but they made me sad. I wonder why and what it meant to those who commissioned it. And how did they weave it? Just incredible. I can imagine living in there. Behind those thick stone walls, safe and cool. Above the world.

Next stop: the Village.

Friday, Violet and I went out west to visit colleges. We visited Mount Holyoke first and luckily were able to get on a tour of the campus. It was raining but the place is lovely. Same idea as Bryn Mawr with the lovely architecture. Violet was put off by the tiny town, but liked the school. She would be a blue lion if she goes right away. Next we drove to Amherst, passing Amherst college, and visiting UMass. It has grown into it's own city and she was not interested at all. Still it was good to view another style of college experience. We then went to our hotel in Hadley, which was much nicer than expected We ordered sushi from a place in Amherst and did a little walk about in the dark in the rain. We watched Dear Evan Hansen on the TV and relaxed. In the morning, we went to Smith in Northampton, and she was happy to be in a larger city. Again, we went on a tour through the campus. It felt large and complicated with many architectural styles represented. These schools do so much for the students, so much support and community building. We sat and had warm drinks and looked out at the pond. Next we went downtown to explore and eat lunch. It was fun to see so many businesses are still there, but much has changed. Hadley exploded into strip mall and box stores, obscuring all the lovely farmland. We had burritos and stepped into Thorne's which is much the same. I looked into Paul & Elizabeth's. We went to a cool bookstore, then headed back to South Hadley to see it in the sun. We drove around, visited the book store and cafe and then headed back to Boston. We also drove over to the house I lived in on Columbus Ave. It's painted yellow now. I think it was red. Doesn't look like much from the street, but I know how beautiful the woodwork is inside and the views. Such a fine, strange time.

I would like to live out there. I miss woods and fields and hills. It was relaxing in a deep way to drive on those back roads.

Back in Brookline. The weather has been terribly warm but is expected to return to seasonable soon. Rainy today but it will clear enough for a walk. Looking forward to Thanksgiving when we will all be here together again.

A cold day. 10 F maybe. I remember in my youth that this was normal for January.

Got a good night sleep last night. I woke a bit in the night and thought about how nice it was to sleep, then wake, then snuggle down and go under again. For some reason I also thought about sending Queen Elizabeth a condolence card, knowing that is the months following the death that are the hardest.

Busy getting ready to send Honey back to college. She got the room she wanted and I'm very happy. Her life back on track. But now I need to find toiletries and picture frames! I will be staying home that day, as we won't be staying or visiting due to plague. They will go Sunday early AM. I'm sad I can't move her in but she is excited to go. I guess if I sent her on a plane to Dublin, I can let her go to Pennsylvania!

No TV last night but I'm enjoying the book Cloud Cuckoo Land very much. Words of the day are centered, open and ? What was the last one? Ah, healthy. Trying to make better diet choices as we finish up all the new year treats.
